When you have things you would like to accomplish, you set goals and work those goals. Sometimes things get in the way and we don’t reach those goals. In order to be successful, you have believe in two things:
- That the goal is possible
- That you can reach the goal
If you don’t believe that your goals, especially the BIG ones, are achievable you might subconsciously sabotage your efforts. Instead of doing what you know you should be doing to reach the goal you find a ton things that have to be done instead. These are often “whirlwind” tasks such as doing the laundry, cleaning out your email, running to the grocery store, organizing your desk, or cleaning the bathroom (it’s really bad when you choose to the clean the bathroom).
One thing to ask yourself is “has anyone ever done this?” If someone else has accomplished this goal, you can too. Do some research and find out who has accomplished the goal and how they did it. What steps did they take? In what order? This will give you the knowledge to create a plan that you can follow using those steps.
As you are researching and creating plans, it is normal for “stuff” to come up. You might feel fear, guilt, doubt, or insecurity. All of this is known as resistance. What comes up for you? Don’t let these feelings stop you. Instead, look at them as just things that need to be cleared out. If you don’t stretch, these feelings stay “hidden”, but when you stretch and they come out, you can address them one by one.
Next, ask yourself what do you need to learn in order to accomplish your goal? Do you need to learn about this issues of the aging, the costs of elder care, your loved one wishes, how to save money for retirement, online marketing, how to train for a marathon, or how to build a website? Whatever it is, there is information easily available to assist you in your learning. Learn and build the skills you need to move forward. Not knowing or having the skill is not a valid excuse to quit.
As you work through the layers of modeling others, addressing your emotions and learning what you need to know, you start to peel back the layers. The more layers you peel back, the more confidence you will obtain. Just take it one step at a time. Each success will take you further down the road to believing that “you got this.”
What would you like to achieve or accomplish? Who has accomplished this goal already? What can you learn from them? What emotions come up? What do you need to learn? What is holding you back?
