There is a powerful tool for getting what you want that most people never use. It is using your imagination to see yourself having exactly what you want. If you can’t see yourself having what you want, you won’t get it or you will have to work extra hard to get it. Who wants that?
Highly successful people including athletes, celebrities, musicians and entrepreneurs use this technique of visualizing what they want (I describe it below). Using this technique helps you build confidence, create motivation and gives you a competitive edge.
Lindsey Vonn, World Cup Winning Skier describes how she uses it… “I always visualize the run before I do it. By the time I get to the start gate, I’ve run that race 100 times already in my head, picturing how I’ll take the turns.”
Before I tell you how to use this technique, let’s take a look at how it works. You might be thinking that this is some kind of Woo-Woo crap. I get it. Actually though, it is based on science.
When you visualize what you want as if you already have it, four things happen.
1. Your brain has a filter called the Reticular Activating System. Every day you take in millions of bits of information (sights, sounds, smells). Your brain’s filter blocks out all of the information that you don’t need. When you visualize, you reprogram the filter to let in new information that was previously blocked.
2. Once new information comes into your conscious brain, you will start getting new ideas and seeing opportunities you didn’t have or see before.
3. You will feel a conflict between where you are now and where you want to be. Your brain wants to close that gap. That conflict motivates you to take the actions you need to take to get you what you want.
4. You will believe that you can you have it and that will build your confidence.
You can use visualization in every area of your life: career/business, relationships, finances, recreation, possessions, and health.
Put your imagination to work for you.
1. Decide what it is that you want.
2. Set a goal for that.
3. Close your eyes and imagine having that. Really see yourself having it. Fill in all of the details. What does it look like, what will you be doing, who will be with you?
4. Add in your senses. What do you see, hear, smell, taste?
5. Add in emotions. How do you feel now that you have it?
Do this every morning first thing when you wake up and every night last thing before you fall asleep. It is going take just a couple of minutes each time.
Can you carve out four to five minutes a day to help make your dream a reality?
